A MedicAlert No plan gives you 24/7 safety, protection and peace of mind. You will benefit from a protection plan if you:

• Live with one or more chronic medical conditions
• Take any medications (ex. blood thinners, blood pressure meds, insulin) that affect how you should be treated in an emergency

MedicAlert’s founder, Dr. Marion Collins, invented the first medical ID and emergency protection service in 1956. After his daughter had a near-fatal anaphylactic reaction, he knew he wouldn’t always be there to protect her. What started as paper ledgers in the Collins’ family living room is now a fully secure digital database of MedicAlert members’ health information.

MedicAlert Foundation is – and has always been - a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. As our founder Dr. Collins stated, “We’re not here to make money, we’re here to save lives.”

Every dollar we take in - from ID sales, annual protection plans, and donations - goes back into the organization. We use those revenues to fund our 24/7 emergency response service, provide first responder training, maintain a secure database for your health information, and make MedicAlert IDs and protection plans available to people who need our protection but are facing financial hardship.

Your personal health profile contains all the information MedicAlert will relay to first responders in an emergency. On your MedicAlert ID, you only have a few lines of engraving to communicate your most critical health conditions. Your health record is where you store everything that is important but won’t fit on your ID, including:

• Medications (including specific dosage and frequency)
• Medical conditions
• Surgeries
• Vaccinations
• Medical devices
• Patient instructions
• Emergency contacts*
• Medical providers
• Doctor-approved Advance directives or DNR documents**
• Documents related to your care**
• Identifying information (especially useful in wandering incidents)

Through our secure online portal, you can complete and update your health record at any time. You can also call our Member Care team to provide updates or email us with your changes. Having a current health profile is critical for your protection, so we’re always happy to help you with updates.

Your health record is stored on highly secure, encrypted, HIPPA-compliant servers. We understand the sensitivity of your health information, so you can be confident your data is secure.

MedicAlert has our own team of dedicated emergency response specialists. They are on call 24/7 to engage with first responders or good Samaritans to help our members get the best care possible in an emergency.

Our live emergency response specialists are your advocate in an accident or medical emergency. They handle calls from first responders, relay your vital medical history to those treating you, and send your full health history to the ER or hospital where you’re being transported. Then they reach out to your emergency contacts, and continue to follow up until your situation is resolved. We are there with you every step of the way.

Many of our team members have been with MedicAlert a long time – some more than 30 years! Most are former EMTs or nurses who know how to communicate complex medical information in an efficient way that emergency personnel can immediately put to use.
